Primary Care Workforce Requirements and Supply Prospects under Alternative Care Delivery Models
The Institute of Medicine’s groundbreaking report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, recommends removing scope of practice barriers so that advanced practice registered nurses are be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training. This research project, co-funded by the Donaghue Foundation, examined the implications of emerging models of primary care (such as the nurse-managed health center) for future primary care workforce needs. The team calculated how many physicians would be required to provide primary care in 2025 under various scenarios involving increased demand for those services, and expanding the number of patient-centered medical homes and nurse-managed health centers. They found that increasing the number of nurse-managed health centers and patient-centered medical homes could mitigate the projected physician shortage. Nurse-managed health centers and patient-centered medical homes rely less on physicians as primary care providers, and more on nurse practitioners and physician assistants, respectively. The team was led by David Auerbach, MS, PhD.
