Examining Opportunities and Barriers to Expansion of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Practice in Public Mental Health

The Institute of Medicine’s groundbreaking report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, recommends removing scope of practice barriers so that advanced practice registered nurses are be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training. This research project will examine the structural, practice, and policy opportunities and barriers that affect psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners’ (PMHNPs) ability to most effectively use their skills and expertise in public mental health settings. Study findings will help policy-makers better integrate PMHNPs into public mental health settings. The team is led by Susan Chapman, RN, PhD.
