NOW on PBS - "Nurses Needed"
According to a government study, by the year 2020, there could be a nationwide shortage of up to one million nurses, which could result in substandard treatment for hundreds of thousands of patients. Just as alarming, fewer nurses are choosing to teach the next generation of professionals, resulting in tens of thousands of applicants being turned away from the nation's nursing schools.

Epstein, M.D., M.A.Hospitals with the highest nurse-staffing levels received the highest ratings from patients with respect to satisfaction with their care. Furthermore, hospitals that received the highest satisfaction ratings from patients provided a modestly higher quality of clinical care than those that received the lowest ratings.

Transforming Health Quality: A Chat with INQRI Program Officer Lori Melichar
The Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative (INQRI) supports teams of nurse scholars and scholars from other disciplines to address gaps in knowledge about the relationship between nursing and health care quality. Lori Melichar serves as INQRI's senior program officer. The Foundation will announce the third round of grantees in June 2008.
